How do I deter drug traffic inside and outside of
the apartment building where I am a tenant?

Answer: If you witness a crime in progress, you should contact the Edmonton Police Service, either by calling 9-1-1 or their non-emergency dispatch line at (780) 423-4567.

In response to a public complaint, the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) teams will investigate a property that appears to be used for illegal activities, and can obtain a court order to close it down if necessary. The court orders make property owners take responsibility for the activities occurring on their property. SCAN gives Albertans another tool to deal with the disturbances that can devastate their neighbourhoods. If you suspect there is a property in your neighbourhood where illegal activity (such as drug dealing or prostitution) may be taking place you can either phone the SCAN unit at 1-866-960-7226, or contact SCAN online at scan.alberta.ca. All complaints are confidential and the identity of those who file complaints will not be revealed at any time.

You may also want to contact your Neighbourhood Empowerment Team (NET). The NET is a community specific crime reduction and prevention program. EPS Constables, Community Capacity Builders and Youth Workers collaborate with those who live, work and play in targeted communities to proactively reduce and prevent crime. You can learn more about this program on the Edmonton Police Service website at the following address: www.edmontonpolice.ca/crimeprevention/NeighbourhoodEmpowermentTeams.

Through Alberta’s Safe Communities Innovation Fund (SCIF), a number of programs have been launched to address drug crime and community safety. In Edmonton, the Community StreetSafe Initiative aims to reduce drug dealing and substance abuse in the Boyle Street area of downtown Edmonton, and the Edmonton Coalition of Crime Councils work within several neighbourhoods to address property crime, drug dealing and graffiti. To learn more about these projects, please visit www.safecommunities.gov.ab.ca/scif.
