Alberta Succession Law Reform

Succession Law public consultations ended May 15, 2009. Thank you to everyone who participated. The feedback provided during this process will be invaluable as this important legislation is reviewed.

Alberta Succession Law Reform Public Consultation took place from March 6 to May 15, 2009. Alberta Justice is continually working to ensure that provincial legislation is up-to-date and meeting the needs of Albertans.

The laws and principles dealing with what happens to an Albertan’s property when they have passed away were developed decades and, in some cases, centuries ago.

This review will help to ensure that these legal principles come in line with Alberta society as it operates today. This means ensuring succession statutes meet current concepts of family, finance, philanthropy, and gender roles as well as new technology.

For more information, please contact Alberta Justice at 780-427-3923 (dial 310-0000 to be connected toll free) or by e-mail at just.successionlaw@gov.ab.ca for more information.

The results of the public consultation are available in the Alberta Succession Law Public Report.
